Every summer we get the same puzzled question: the package says 8 days, so why am I paying for only 6 nights? It is not a trick, it is simply how travel arithmetic works, and once you learn to read it, you will compare offers much more fairly. In this guide we break it down on two real programs from our offer, Hurghada on direct Air Cairo flights and Mallorca on Air Serbia flights, because their schedules are almost opposite and show both ends of the story.
Days count the calendar, nights count the hotel
The number of days counts every calendar date the trip touches, including the day you fly out and the day you fly back. The number of nights counts what you actually sleep through at the hotel, and that is what you pay the hotel for. So 6 nights spread over 8 days means: departure day, six full hotel nights, and a final day that ends with the flight home. Whether those first and last days are worth much depends entirely on the flight times, and this is where destinations differ dramatically.
Example one: Hurghada, where the schedule works in your favor
Our Hurghada program flies out of Belgrade at 06.30 in the morning and lands around 10.50 local time. After the transfer you are at the hotel by early afternoon, which means day one gives you an almost full day of pool and sea. The return flight leaves at 03.05 after midnight and lands in Belgrade at 05.30, so on your last full day you check out of the room by 12.00, spend the afternoon at the resort, and head to the airport late in the evening. In practice, 6 nights in Hurghada feel like seven days of holiday. The program comes in four lengths, 6 nights over 8 days, 9 nights over 11 days, 10 nights over 12 days and 13 nights over 15 days, with departures spread across the week: Saturdays for 6 and 13 nights, Sundays and Tuesdays for 9 nights, Wednesdays and Fridays for 10 nights.
Example two: Mallorca, where the evening flight changes the math
The Mallorca schedule is the mirror image. The flight leaves Belgrade at 17.15 and lands in Palma at 19.50, so day one is really just check-in and dinner. On the way back the flight departs at 20.35 and lands in Belgrade at 23.00, which means your last day is almost fully usable, you check out in the morning, leave luggage at reception, and enjoy the beach until the afternoon transfer. Saturday departures give 7 nights, Thursday and Sunday departures give 10 or 11 nights. Same arithmetic, completely different feel, and neither is wrong, you just need to know what you are buying.
Check-in and check-out are part of the deal
Hotel rules add the final piece. Rooms are typically available from 14.00 or 15.00 and must be vacated by 10.00 to 12.00 on the last day, depending on the destination. If your return flight leaves late at night, you can usually pay locally for a late check-out or day use room, subject to availability, which on the Hurghada schedule is often money well spent. Meal services follow the nights, not the days, so a 6 night half board package includes six dinners.
How to compare offers fairly
Our advice after years of doing this: always compare packages by the number of nights and by flight times, never by the number of days in the headline. A 10 night offer with good flight times beats an 11 day offer with a late arrival and an early departure.
