Here is an honest way to match your holiday budget to a destination, with real categories instead of vague promises.
Start with the total, not the package price
The first rule: your budget is everything you will spend, not the number on the offer. Add pocket money for meals outside the hotel, excursions, transfers if they are not included and the small airport tax of coffee and sandwiches. As a rule of thumb, plan the package price plus 30 to 50 percent for extras on a half-board trip, less for all-inclusive where dinners are already solved. Once you have that total, the map opens up in a much more truthful way.
Smart money: where a modest budget lives large
The strongest value plays in our region are the all-inclusive coasts. On the Red Sea, Hurghada delivers warm sea in any month, a house reef and full board for prices that European islands cannot touch. The Turkish riviera around Antalya plays the same game with bigger hotels and water slides for the kids. And close to home, the Montenegrin coast removes the flight entirely, which for a family of four is a serious line item. In this bracket, the trick is picking the right hotel, because the destination itself is already doing the heavy lifting.
The middle: Greek classics and island character
With a mid-range budget, Greece opens up properly. Halkidiki is the reliable workhorse: pine forests, clear water and tavernas at fair prices. Corfu adds Venetian streets and a greener, softer landscape. Island prices rise with the ferry distance and the Instagram fame, so a smart mid-budget move is choosing the island one step less famous than the one everyone mentions. Your money goes into better rooms and longer dinners instead of the name.
Mid-budget is also where timing does its loudest work. The same Halkidiki hotel can differ by a third between late June and early August, with the sea equally warm in both. If your dates can move even one week, move them and collect the difference in dinners. Agencies watch this seasonal spread every year; travelers discover it once and never book blind again.
The upper shelf: where the premium is real
Some places cost more and are worth it, if you know why you are paying. Santorini charges for the caldera view, and the view honestly delivers. Sardinia charges for water that looks borrowed from the Caribbean and beaches that stay uncrowded outside August. Palma de Mallorca combines a real city with real beaches, which is rarer than it sounds. The premium bracket rewards planning most: booked early, these destinations cost noticeably less than in a July panic.
One caution for this bracket: premium destinations punish improvisation. On Santorini the difference between a caldera room and a road-facing one is the entire point of the trip, and the good ones are gone by spring. The same goes for Sardinia in August, when half of Italy heads for its own sea. Decide early or choose elsewhere without regret.
