Nobody comes to Rimske Terme in Slovenia for sightseeing, and that is exactly why the sightseeing here surprises people. After a day and a half of pools and saunas, a strange thing happens: you feel like moving again. The good news is that the Savinja valley around Rimske Toplice hides more history per kilometre than it has any right to, and the two nearest towns are worth half a day each. Here is how to spend the hours between two swims.
Lasko, the beer town, 5 kilometres away
Ten minutes down the valley sits Lasko, a town that has spent a century and a half perfecting the opposite of thermal water. This is the home of Slovenia's most famous brewery, and the Lasko Brewery tour ends, as all good brewery tours do, with a tasting. The old town is compact and pleasant, with a small museum and riverside cafes, and the irony is not lost on anyone that Slovenia's beer capital also has its own thermal spa, Thermana Lasko. Locals switch between the two liquids without any visible moral conflict. The beer comes with a proper local table too; look for an inn with a daily menu around noon, when this corner of Slovenia serves homemade soups, štruklji dumplings and honey cakes at prices that feel like a misprint. If you visit in July, the town hosts Pivo in cvetje, a beer and flowers festival that turns quiet Lasko loudly festive for a weekend.
Celje, the city of counts, 12 kilometres away
North of the resort lies Celje, one of Slovenia's oldest cities, Roman Celeia in a previous life. The reason to go is the Old Castle, the largest medieval fortress in the country, standing on a hill above town with a view that stretches across the Savinja valley on a clear day. This was the seat of the Counts of Celje, the family whose three golden stars ended up on the Slovenian flag. Down in the city, the Prince's Palace museum covers the Roman layer, and the old town works well for an unhurried lunch. Count on a relaxed half day, castle included.
Walks and rides straight from the resort
You do not need a car for the closest excursions. Paths lead from the resort park into the forest above the springs, and the valley floor carries walking and cycling routes along the Savinja river. A few ideas that require nothing more than decent shoes:
- The spa park itself, planted with exotic trees by 19th-century owners who took their promenades seriously
- The riverside path along the Savinja, flat and easy in both directions
- The climb to the church of Our Lady of Lourdes for the postcard view back at the resort

Further afield: monks and capital cities
With a car and a free day, two directions open up. South-west of Lasko hides Jurkloster, a former Carthusian monastery in a valley so quiet it makes the spa feel busy; the Carthusians knew how to pick real estate. In the other direction, Ljubljana is about an hour away, close enough that you can have morning coffee by the river, walk the old town under the castle, and still be back in the thermal pool before dinner. If you are driving home towards Serbia, Budapest also works as an overnight break that turns one trip into two.
Timing your excursions
A practical rhythm that works: water in the morning, when the pools are calmest, excursion after lunch, then back for the evening swim when day visitors have gone home. Celje castle is open year-round but shows best on clear days, so save it for good weather and keep Lasko, with its brewery and museum, as the rainy-day card. In winter the valley roads are kept clear, though the castle hill can be icy underfoot, so pack shoes with grip. In summer, start walks along the Savinja early; by afternoon the valley holds heat, and you will be glad the thermal pools also include cooler options.
