Halkidiki reaches into the Aegean like a three-fingered hand off the coast of northern Greece. For travellers from our region it is one of the closest true Mediterranean escapes — a comfortable drive or a short flight to Thessaloniki, and then a warm, transparent sea. The trick is knowing that each "finger" is a different holiday.
Kassandra — the lively one
The first peninsula is the most developed and the easiest for a carefree beach holiday. Organised beaches, beach bars, family hotels and a steady rhythm of nightlife. Base yourself in Hanioti, Pefkohori or Kallithea if you want everything within walking distance.
Sithonia — the wild one
Greener and quieter, with pine forests spilling down to turquoise coves. This is where you rent a car and chase beaches like Kavourotripes ("Orange Beach") and Kalamitsi. Fewer big resorts, more small tavernas and hidden bays.
Athos — the sacred one
The third finger is the monastic republic of Mount Athos, closed to casual visitors. But the gateway town of Ouranoupoli and the little island of Ammouliani make beautiful, low-key day trips, and boat cruises sail along the monastery coastline.
When to go
June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is warm, prices are gentler and the beaches breathe. July and August are the busiest and hottest.
Good to know
- Rent a car on Sithonia — the best beaches are not on the bus line.
- Carry some cash for small family tavernas.
- Book July/August well in advance; the best value hotels fill first.
