For travellers from the region, the Montenegrin coast is the sea you can reach by car in an afternoon — and it squeezes a remarkable range into a short strip. In under two hours of driving you go from the fjord-like Bay of Kotor to the sandy south near the Albanian border.
The Bay of Kotor
Ringed by mountains, the bay feels more like a Norwegian fjord than the Adriatic. Walk the walls of medieval Kotor, wander photogenic Perast and take a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks.
Budva and the Riviera
Budva is the coast's lively heart: a walled old town, a string of beaches and a busy nightlife. Just south, the iconic islet-hotel of Sveti Stefan is one of the Adriatic's most photographed sights.
The sandy south
Beyond Bar, the beaches turn to real sand. Ulcinj's Velika Plaža ("Big Beach") runs for around 12 kilometres and is a magnet for families and windsurfers, with a distinctly relaxed, southern feel.
When to go
June and September are ideal — warm sea, manageable crowds. July and August are peak, and the coast road gets busy.
